Sainte-Marguerite Island is the largest of the two Lérins islands, opposite Cannes. She served as a prison for the famous man with an iron mask. After the revocation of the edict of Nantes, the fort of the island of Sainte-Marguerite was one of the four places of imprisonment of the Huguenots, with the tower of Constance at Aigues-Mortes, the fort of Brescou and the castle Yew. In the nineteenth century, the island is a place of detention for Arab prisoners deported from Algeria. It is separated from the cape of the Croisette, in the commune of Cannes, by a shallow strait 1,300 m wide. It extends from west to east for a distance of 3.2 km, and its maximum width is about 900 m. There are beautiful eucalyptus woods, the oldest in Europe, and pine trees. The majority of the island is covered by forest, state-owned protected area. About 20 people live on the island permanently
